The Opportunity Card is only one way into a German job. Which route suits you depends on one thing above all: whether an employer has already made you an offer.

Searching without an offer is what the card was designed for. You get up to twelve months on the ground with part-time work rights — but the cost of that year is yours, and a job is not promised.
An offer in hand: the Skilled Worker visa
Once a company commits to hiring you in a role that fits your recognised qualification, you can go directly to the skilled-employment residence permit. You arrive with a contract and a salary, and the permit is tied to qualified work in your field.
Recognition usually has to come first, and the employer may need to supply details of the role and pay.
A high enough salary: the EU Blue Card
Germany reserves the Blue Card for graduates whose pay clears an annually updated minimum; shortage occupations and new graduates face a reduced minimum. It brings faster permanent residence and easier family reunion.
Some IT specialists qualify through experience rather than a degree. Check the current thresholds before salary talks, so you know which permit an offer unlocks.
Moving between routes
These routes connect. A common path is to arrive on the Opportunity Card, find work during the year, and switch to a Skilled Worker permit or Blue Card from inside Germany without leaving.
That switch is the strongest reason to choose the card: it turns a long-distance job search into a face-to-face one.
Picking the right one
With a qualifying offer already, apply for the work permit directly — it is quicker and you avoid funding a search year. With strong qualifications but no offer, the Opportunity Card is the practical choice. If you are aiming at a high salary, keep the Blue Card in view while negotiating.
